Create distance early

When safe and possible, disengagement and leaving are preferable to escalating a confrontation. Maintain space, notice exits, keep communication simple, and seek help when needed.

Do not confuse de-escalation with a guarantee

Another person’s behavior is not fully controllable. If you believe danger is imminent, prioritize getting to safety and contacting appropriate local emergency services.
